Honoring Faith and Tradition: Divine Treasures

During Black History month, many reflect on the accomplishments and contributions of Black leaders in history. In Des Moines, one small business continues that legacy of community service and faith. Divine Treasures, a Catholic book and gift store, was founded in 1992 by Lois Brookhart, a Black American Catholic who felt called to serve her community. More than 30 years later, the store continues its mission: providing a place where people can find hope, spiritual support, and faith-centered resources.

The idea for Divine Treasures began when Lois Brookhart went on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje in the early 1990’s where she felt inspired to serve the local Des Moines community with her husband. Throughout the past 30 years, this once small family-owned business has been able to grow, changing from three past locations to 5701 Hickman Rd Des Moines, IA 50310. Although the store’s owners have changed to Chris and Angela Obbereuter starting in 2025, Divine Treasures has continued to serve the community through pivotal moments in people’s lives such as weddings and funerals. According to store manager Daniel Beneventi, “a small part in situations such as these [communions, weddings, celebrations, and illnesses] and having the items to help people during these important life moments is an honor.”

Divine Treasures has always done its best to give back to the community, assisting with local schools and churches through donations and store discounts. Divine Treasures interacts with the community through ‘pop-up markets’ where they bring store items to smaller, surrounding communities, allowing those of all backgrounds and ages to access faith based resources without needing to travel far. 

In recognition of Black History Month, Divine Treasures contributes to highlighting the contributions made by Black individuals to communities around the world. Within these faithful communities, many Black leaders and historical figures have had a large impact. Understanding these stories helps students see how people from different backgrounds have shaped history and inspired others. It also reminds us that, despite differences in culture or background, people share common values such as compassion, service, and respect for others.
